Any time internationally renowned artists are shown on Australian soil, it’s a big deal.
Each year the Sydney International Art Series brings blockbuster exhibitions down under and this summer’s display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, featuring Tacita Dean, is not to be missed.
The expansive exhibition is the largest presentation of Tacita’s work ever seen in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a deep dive into the multidisciplinary artist’s acclaimed career.
Born in the UK but based between LA and Berlin, Tacita is best known for her photochemical films, photography and installations that explore themes of history, chance, time, and the medium of analogue film itself.
The MCA’s survey showcases significant artworks encompassing new and recent works, including a major new installation, monumental chalkboard drawings, lithographic cloudscapes, collage, and photography. It’s a powerful and playful reflection of the artist’s diverse practice, spanning multiple mediums.
The opening weekend talk between Tacita and MCA Director Suzanne Cotter was a sold-out success, but there’s a wider program of events running throughout the exhibition.
A dedicated family space called Play with Chance invites visitors of all ages to create clay shapes in an interactive activity inspired by Tactia’s works, and you can also attend one of the curators and cross-disciplinary talks, exhibition tours, and artist-led creative sessions!
