In the Sonoran Desert of southern California is the city of Palm Springs. Favoured by the Hollywood set for decades thanks to its simultaneous seclusion from and proximity to Los Angeles, Palm Springs has long been a playground for the rich and famous – home to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Liberace over the years. With its iconic mid-century architecture and Mars-like deserts, many creatives have found inspiration and subject matter in this strange and amazing city. One of them is Kate Ballis, an Australian photographer based in Melbourne who has shot Palm Springs alongside her husband Tom Blachford countless times.

After taking a series of photography classes at The Art Room in early 2017, Kate built up her skills and confidence in playing with distortion and colour, settling on an infrared configuration to completely change the way she saw Palm Springs in her photo series, Infra Realism.

Following an exhibition of her eerie, surreal images at Jardan late last year, the Infra Realism series will soon be available to purchase as an art book. Comprising more than 100 colour images photographed over several trips, Infra Realism casts new light on this historic location.
