Since studying sculpture and spatial practice at the Victorian College of the Arts, Ryan L Foote has been working as an artist creating and designing ceramics, installations, and even chocolates.
Food is the thread that combines these mediums, serving as the inspiration for Ryan’s immersive installations, the purpose of his ceramics tableware, and the literal substance of his 3D printed edible chocolates.
‘I love the use of food in my art practice as it is fun and playful while also engaging with cultural identity,’ Ryan says. ‘I love the idea that everyone, no matter their upbringing or cultural background, has a relationship with food.’
You can now see Ryan’s work in person at R L Foote Design Studio in Clifton Hill, Melbourne, where he makes fine porcelain tableware, decor, and architectural products.
Designed primarily with the hospitality industry in mind, Ryan’s ceramic works are highly functional, yet playful. ‘I primarily use slip cast ceramics which means my forms can be very experimental and sculptural,’ he says. ‘I might get a chef, bar, or restaurant asking for a custom plate or drink vessel which we 3D model, render and have samples made within weeks. Other times we might spend weeks or months developing the perfect glaze tone/effect for clients.’
Customers are invited to visit the beautiful light-filled space to view or purchase the works when the showroom is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday.
Ryan also hosts ceramic workshops and classes in the space, including courses on glaze making, slip casting, and hand building.
As mentioned, ceramics are just one facet of Ryan’s artistic practice. When he’s not in Melbourne making ceramics or teaching courses, he’s in Hong Kong running his commercial chocolate factory and brand, Chocolates By Ryan L Foote.
‘While both ceramics and chocolates at first feel very different, the technical and chemical process behind them both are often mirrored,’ says Ryan, who compares heat treatments in kilns to tempering chocolate, and developing a ceramic glaze to making chocolate ganache. The similarities and required attention to detail are endless.’
