Melbourne has a small, thriving community of independent publishers. One of the most inspiring success stories of the past year is Lindsay, an online and print magazine about people, places, and culture.
Since launching their first printed issue in 2018, Lindsay has gone from strength to strength. In 12 months, Lindsay has amassed dedicated readers in over 120 countries, won a distinction for Publication Design in the 2018 AGDA Design Awards and is stocked in some of the world’s most prestigious museums and book stores (including MoMA PS1 in New York and Daikanyama T-Site in Tokyo). This week, Issue No. 3 of Lindsay will be released to the world, almost exactly a year after its inaugural issue.
Beth Wilkinson, the Melbourne-based photographer and designer behind Lindsay, is quite the creative tour de force. As the designer, editor and creative director of Lindsay, the love and devotion poured into the publication is imbued in its pages. ‘From a concept perspective, Lindsay is relatively unchanged’, Beth reflects, ‘…it’s a magazine and a community (we’re running more real-life events all the time) that is here to help people better understand and appreciate different cultures and places around the world. I hope that never changes’. In every other sense, Lindsay is completely different. ‘It’s gone from being an idea to something tangible that is out there in the world,’ Beth says.
This Thursday, Beth and the host of artists, writers, and photographers who contributed works will be celebrating their hard work at the Issue No. 3 launch party! In addition to the festivities, novelist Anna Snoeksta will speak about deepsea diving across the globe, from the history of Indigenous divers in Western Australia to the traditions of Japan’s Ama divers.
