Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday announced that Melbourne will become home to the country’s largest contemporary art gallery, NGV Contemporary. This major announcement includes a huge redevelopment to the city’s arts precinct, further elevating Melbourne’s reputation as a world-leader for art and design. That is HUGE news!
‘It’s a game-changer for our city that will cement Melbourne as the cultural capital of Australia,’ Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said of the arts precinct transformation.
NGV Contemporary will be built on the site of the Carlton & United Breweries Building on Southbank Boulevard.
In addition to this epic new gallery, the redevelopment will also see 1 City Road emerging as a cultural hub, home to the Australian Performing Arts Gallery, an expanded Australian Music Vault, administrative, education and research facilities, and a new centre for independent arts organisations.
Stay tuned – we’ll be keeping our eyes on this!
