Rugs are a key investment piece that have the power to make a major impact in any interior space.
Decide on the right rug for your home with the following expert advice from Armadillo’s co-founders, before entering below for your chance to WIN a stunning rug from their new collection!
How to choose a bedroom rug
In the bedroom, texture is paramount. When stepping out of bed in the morning, you ideally want to feel the soft texture of an exceptionally plush rug underfoot.
Armadillo’s Meadow rug lends itself to this experience with its pure wool texture that is carded, spun, and knotted by hand. This ’70s-inspired style has a tactility reminiscent of heritage tweed that bridges the gap between a plain and patterned rug.
When selecting a bedroom rug, choose a generous size that allows a 70-90cm border around your bed frame and side tables.
Alternatively, place the lower two thirds of the bed on top of your rug, to create a soft and warm landing pad for bare feet.
Because bedrooms are infrequently trafficked, you can choose a lighter colour and plusher texture for this space. Meadow is a thick pile rug available in five dreamy, retro-inspired shades to transform your bedroom into a relaxing retreat.
Living room rug rules
There are two tried and true options when it comes to placement of a living room rug.
The ideal outcome is to choose a rug big enough to fully fit all of your furniture on top, with at least 20cm of rug visible on all sides.
If that’s not possible, arrange your furniture partially on top, with the rug sitting underneath the front two legs of your sofa and side chairs.
The look of your living room rug should balance aesthetics and durability to suit frequent use, and the Willow rug strikes this balance well. Armadillo’s thinnest rug yet, the blend of fibres makes for an incredibly soft yet unobtrusive and hardworking surface.
‘You’ll feel grounded without even realising it,’ says Armadillo co-founder Sally Pottharst.
‘We see Willow as being most impactful in a generous size. It creates an expanse of calm, quietly tying everything together… It feels light and breathable in summer, yet still cosy underfoot in winter.’
Rugs in dining rooms — yes or no?
Rugs in dining rooms are a massive yes for Armadillo co-founder Jodie Fried, who has the Willow rug in her own home. The light construction and rug’s linen, jute, and wool fabrication wears in a beautifully forgiving way, while withstanding her family’s frequent hospitality.
The fringed edge of the Willow rug is also a great feature for visually defining the dining area, especially in an open-plan space.
‘The fringe also speaks to the authenticity of our handmade technique, as it’s not simply decorative — it’s actually the extension of the warp of the rug. Allowing a bit of floor space around the fringe will showcase the detail better,’ says Jodie.
‘There’s no need to be precious though — it will look lovely when allowed to settle in an undone, relaxed way.’
