Roam Merrijig founder Yuen Coleman is from a family of snowboarders who have always loved Victoria’s alpine region.
The town of Merrijig, in particular, struck her as a ‘relatively undiscovered area of such beauty’ worthy of more accommodation to suit winter adventurers and summer tourists.
‘There were only a handful of properties that ticked the boxes of being both functional and beautiful,’ Yuen says.
In 2020, a vacant block of land came up for sale for Yuen to design and build her own boutique getaway in the town. ‘I remember immediately falling in love with the incredible views’ she says.
Working with modular home builder Prebuilt, Yuen created Roam Merrijig — a three-bedroom home across two-storeys that references global mountain retreats and cabins.
‘I was inspired by dark cabins and barns in Queenstown,’ says Yuen. ‘The aim was to create a space that had the same feeling of calm, rustic and quiet luxury… I wanted to create an internal space that spoke of cosiness and warmth that dances seamlessly with the outdoors.’
The material palette speaks to this vision, incorporating colours from nature (charcoal, blues, greens, mustards, burnt orange), and natural materials (timber, stone, leather, and wool).
A black facade offers an understated elegance, allowing the natural surroundings to take centre stage. ‘It acts as a canvas that highlights the greens, browns and blues of the environment,’ says Yuen.
‘We also painted the walls in a dark colour (Dulux Grey Cabin) so that the eyes are automatically drawn outside.’
The property has been specifically designed with winter and summer adventurers in mind with the addition of equipment storage on entry, undercover parking, and generous indoors and outdoor spaces to gather.
Yuen’s favourite element of the accommodation are the mountain and valley views, wildlife, and spectacular sunsets framed indoors by floor-to-ceiling windows.
She’s not only created a beautiful property, but a feeling of ‘never wanting to leave’ that she hopes to impart on every guest that stays at Roam Merrijig.
‘We are located within five minute’s drive to the gates to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling resorts, which makes it perfect for adventure-seeking families, groups, or couples or simply a place to pause and relax in front of the wood fire whilst watching the wildlife.’
