Nestled in probably the most sought-after pocket of Fitzroy, this light-filled, open plan home is a feast of glorious textures and materials.
The young family who have lived here for the last four years undertook a thoughtful, design-led renovation with the intention of bringing the interiors up to speed with the home’s excellent 1980’s bones.
‘The house was originally built in the early 80s,’ explains the owner. ‘By the time we got it, there had been a few makeovers, but none which truly made the most of the property’s width, northern aspect and solid bones.’
The new layout is simple. Beyond the grey brick facade punctured by a statement glass brick wall inserts lies the communal areas. To the east is the kitchen and dining room, and to the west is an incredible double-height living room. The north-facing courtyard runs almost the full length of the property, funnelling light into these communal spaces via huge sliding glass doors.
At the top of the sweeping staircase in the corner of the living room are three bedrooms, two of which overlook the courtyard. The third (and largest) has its own private balcony.
Texturally, the house feels almost vintage with a modern twist. Light travertine crazy paving is present throughout, sitting in easy dialogue with the exposed and painted brick to lighten the whole space. Timber detailing anchors the remainder of the layout, while textured walls and the tiled kitchen walls create points of interest in the complexity.
‘So many inner-city houses are forced to follow the same formula, but here with generous width and modern construction techniques we have designed and built a house that honours its original modernist roots,’ says the owner. ‘Our palette is heavy on texture but consistent on tone, which is what we think makes it so relaxed and timeless.’
Very soon, it will be a warm and inviting space for a new family to enjoy!
