When it came time for Marloe Morgan to design the most recent collection from her ceramics brand Marloe Marloe, she looked for inspiration in something no one has been able to do for a long time… Travel!
‘It was my intention to capture the essence of travel, adventure and freedom,’ she says. ‘I wanted to transport us to places that currently only exist in our minds and memory.’
Marloe Marloe was founded in 2013, a year after Marloe learned the craft while living in the Gold Coast on Yugambeh Country. She had an unusual trajectory for a small-time maker – converting her solo, artisan project into commercial commissions, within a year!
‘I set up a small studio in my garage and took my first collection to markets,’ she explains. ‘The custom requests quickly followed and my ceramic practice became focussed solely within the commercial and hospitality space.’
But after six years of building strong relationships with clients such as The Calile Hotel, Halcyon House, and Hellenika restaurant, Marloe was craving the creative freedom that drew her to ceramics in the first place. In 2018, she turned her eye back to decorative sculpture and launched an online store with a small, 8-piece collection.
Cerulean is the latest of those sculptural collections. The textured glaze was developed over six months (!) to find the perfect consistency of cascading pearly droplets against the bone-coloured stoneware clay. The second part of the collection contains rounded shiny vessels painted a blue – a rare foray into colour from Marloe’s traditional monochromatic palette. All pieces are all handmade both in Australia and Indonesia (the idyllic campaign images for Cerulean were shot in Bali!).
This won’t be the last time you see this excellent collection online. Since partnering with Byron Bay-based consultancy agency Del Rainbow, Marloe Marloe has scored retail partnerships with Browns Fashion, Moda Operandi and Net-A-Porter!
