The Gold Coast's Cutest Design Store

Expanding a business can often mean outgrowing a site, and leaving behind the furniture and displays that once supported the enterprise. But what might designing for future growth look like?

We chat with Chloe Naughton about her collaboration with Daniel Wilson on the fit-out of Gold Coast boutique Kind Curations, about future-proofing their designs through the use of refined modular furniture. Good for the environment, and good for business!

In 2007, Chloe Naughton and Daniel Wilson designed the sleek and refined fit-out for contemporary homewares fashion and accessories stores, Kind Curations, located in Cornerstone Stores on the Gold Coast.  Owners Kasey Attard and Sam Treffers were curating items from brands that work in a responsible and sustainable manner… so the design of the shop needed to reflect this ethos.

Chloe and Daniel were already familiar with the Richards and Spence designed architecture, and relished the opportunity to design their own fit-out in an architecturally designed space they admired.

Kind Curations’ original lease was for a single tenancy, but Kasey and Sam always had ambitions to grow their business. When Chloe and Daniel first designed the space in 2017, they did so with future growth in mind. This informed their clever use of modular furniture, that would simplify the construction process and minimise material waste, and ‘also provide flexibility, allowing for the testing of different product ranges and displays in multiple ways.’

Chloe explains that the ‘material palette of birch ply and radiata pine provides a muted backdrop for the diverse range of products to remain the focal point.’ As everything is made in loose, moveable components, the owners can re-imagine the space easily to change displays, without losing any of the brand’s well-honed identity. Chloe also highlights how the modular forms were deliberately fabricated to use standard material dimensions, to minimise any material waste in the production process.

The stackable, moveable, tessellating furniture provide a perfect platform to highlight Kind Curations’ carefully selected product range, which includes brands that are environmentally responsible, as well as the work of local designers and makers. Dan cites the Hunchmarks Ceramics by Tim Wilson and ‘anything by Patagonia’ as favourites, while Chloe swoons over the glassware by Maison Balzac, and accessories from St Agni.

As the business goes from strength-to-strength, the sleek modular fit-out is ready for any future expansions!
