Highlights From The 2019 NSW Architecture Awards Shortlist

The National Architecture Awards program is Australia’s most prestigious awards program for architecture. After all, this is the industry-recognised awards program of the Australian Institute of Architects, and submissions are put through a rigorous judging process which includes site visits to each shortlisted project.

Following the announcement of the Victorian Architecture Awards shortlist in mid-April, today the spotlight is on New South Wales, as we delve into some of the shortlisted projects in the residential categories.

The shortlisted projects for the NSW Architecture Awards were announced last night, with 97 entries selected over 12 categories. The annual competition has seen an increase in entries this year, particularly across the Houses (New) and Multi-Residential categories. It’s always incredible to see the high calibre of projects from so many Australian architects, and this year is no exception!

Benn Penna Architecture’s transformation of a period home in Naremburn Twin Peaks House highlights a wonderfully voluminous space (we’ll be featuring this project in more depth next week), while the natural stone wall in Renato D’Ettorre’s GB House makes for a spectacular design feature.

A combination of cool concrete and warm timber was noted as a ‘strong trend’ by NSW Chapter President Kathlyn Loseby, and is perhaps best-demonstrated here in the ‘Extruded House’ by MCK Architects, as well as the Courted House by Breakspear Architects.

The Chapter President added that ‘sustainability is gaining even greater emphasis for architects and their clients’, with a record number of entries received in the recently formalised process for the Sustainability category. Top effort, NSW!

The next stage of the judging process will see competition jurors visiting the shortlisted project sites in the next few weeks to help determine the category Named Awards winners, including the NSW Architecture Medallion for best entry across all categories, the NSW Premier’s Prize, The City of Sydney Lord Mayor’s Prize and the Enduring Architecture Award.

The winning projects will be announced in Alexandria, Sydney on July 5th. Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop!
