It’s 39 days until Christmas.

Maybe you’re one of those people that has all your thoughtful gift-giving organised, or… maybe you were just hanging out for the release of Craft Victoria’s catalogue, The Collector: Sustainability of Design’!

This year, Craft’s conscientious edit has been photographed in the stunning Cremorne home of collector and designer Julia Cox with styling by our girl Stephanie Stamatis, and photography by Lauren Bamford – if you needed any help picturing the perfect pieces in the homes of your loved ones (or, perhaps, your own!).

Sarah Weston was the curator-extraordinaire, managing the development of this wishlist, which champions supporting local, and also valuing quality over quantity at a time when consumer frenzy typically peaks. ‘Craft’s catalogue explores a different lived environment and with that, a recognition that the objects we choose to surround ourselves with, have an impact on how we think and feel,’ explains the Retail and Business Development Manager. ‘From our very first conversation, we knew Julia’s attention to sustainable systems and love of object and history, made it an ideal setting for the conversations we wanted to have around sustainability and collecting.’

Everyone (us included) is talking about issues surrounding our communities and the future of the planet at the moment. ‘In having a conversation around collecting, in celebrating the work of local craftspeople, we’re making a conscious decision to support a more sustainable means of production, and to have a conversation around how we value the objects with which we surround ourselves and what those objects bring to our lives as well,’ adds Sarah.

In 2018, she has witnessed a newfound buzz around craft and making – from people questioning processes, materiality, and how we assign ‘value’, to relationships between consumers and producers, and how this all ties in with wider political and social issues. ‘Increasingly we’re realising that as our lives become more immersed in the digital, craft and the handmade offers a way back into connecting with our bodies and shared histories,’ she tells ‘More and more people are taking up craft or are interested in learning more’.

If you too value this vision and like what you see, visit Craft Victoria online or at their new home in Melbourne’s CBD, where you can hear the stories of our craftspeople and designers, become a member of the organisation, and support local makers.
