Cassie Byrnes is a woman of many talents. Since graduating from RMIT textile design in 2014, her distinctive prints and patterns have gathered an incredible following. She’s worked on collaborations with businesses as far afield as the USA and Europe. Closer to home, she’s been commissioned to create a range of textiles for labels including Kuwaii, Verner, and Country Road. There’s no doubt about it, Cassie’s star is well and truly on the rise.
Naturally, then, we’ve jumped on the bandwagon (!) and invited Cassie to create her very first exhibition of original paintings. We’re PROUD AS PUNCH to be showing her work at TDF Collect later this month!
Whilst this exhibition marks a new direction for Cassie, she is certainly no stranger to a paintbrush. Most of her textile designs start as gouache paintings on paper. These loose, painterly experiments allow Cassie a kind of uninhibited creative freedom that is essential to her practice. From these paintings, colour palettes and motifs begin to emerge.
‘When designing a new collection of patterns, I spent months creating mini artworks on paper with gouache’ Cassie says. ‘I naturally took a similar experimental approach with this exhibition’.
‘Gondwanaland‘ brings together a series of paintings on linen inspired by Pangea, a supercontinent that existed 200 million years ago.
This body of work extends Cassie’s ongoing fascination with the prehistoric landscape. The paintings in this show reference rock formations, vegetation and flora thought to have covered the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana millions of years ago. In particular, the prehistoric protea, a species which has lineage dating back to this era, is a recurring theme.
The works in Cassie’s upcoming show are now pictured on the TDF Collect website! We are accepting pre-sales via email – enquiries please email lisa@thedesignfiles.net – thankyou!
