We are big fans of local design studio Coco Flip, launched by young Melbourne designer Kate Stokes back in 2010. Over the past six years, Kate has launched a number of different lighting and furniture designs (like this one, which you probably recognise), and this month she’s back with a beautiful brand new lighting range.
The Mayu collection is made up of five different pendant lights and one floor lamp. The pendants range from smaller shades (starting at 38cm) up to really long, sculptural pieces that measure 1.7m long. In keeping with Kate’s commitment to local manufacturing, the entire collection is made by hand in Melbourne.
Though designed and made locally, the Mayu range was originally inspired by time spent abroad. Two years ago, Kate and her husband Haslett spent six weeks travelling and camping around Iceland, and the experience had a huge impact on them both. ‘There is something so pure and otherworldly and quiet and magical about the landscapes there. It feels like time has stopped, beauty is everywhere and suddenly humans seem very small and insignificant’ Kate recalls. ‘Capturing that feeling in a lighting product is perhaps a bit of a stretch for the imagination, but we tried here, and hopefully you can get a sense of the serenity and subtle allure. We really tried to keep the product very pure, timeless and delicate in nature’. The Mayu collection aims to creates an atmosphere in a space, rather than being purely functional.
What might look like a very simple collection of lights is in fact the most complex of Kate’s designs to date. ‘We wanted everything to appear seamless and pure and effortless, which is actually very difficult, and because each individual shade is hand made they are time consuming to produce’ Kate explains. Each shade is hand cut, laminated, stiched and taped around a powder-coated wire frame by hand. The individual shades are then nested together and assembled with integrated LED lighting, giving the appearance that the entire inner form is illuminated. The result is a range of glowing oversized jewel-like forms – striking sculptural artworks, as well as functional lighting pieces.
Coco Flip will officially launch the new Mayu Collection at Denfair, June 2nd – 4th in Melbourne.
