As you know we're big fans of Sydney based company Basil Bangs, and have featured their beautiful sun umbrellas here quite a bit since their launch in 2010. This summer, Krista Heubner and Mike Durante, the clever partnership behind Basil Bangs have caught our eye once again, having undertaken an amazing collaboration with respected Sydney artist and designer Jonathan Zawada.  The results are pretty spectacular! Having recently developed a new printing process that allows them to treat the entire canopy of their umbrellas as one complete design, Krista and Mike were keen on the idea of working with an artist to develop something special for this application.  'We have been fans of Jonathan's work for ages, so we just threw it out there!' explains Krista of this inspired collab.  Needless to say, they were pretty excited when Jonathan accepted the challenge! For his part, Jonathan was equally chuffed to partner on the project.  'I’ve been wanting to design an umbrella for years!' he says.  'To be honest, I’ve always been much more excited about designing things that have a practical use than the more frivolous stuff I do for fashion and music. An umbrella is such a great and surprisingly under-utilised canvas, and there is something domestic about it that really speaks to me - I have fond memories of playing on the beach under big yellow and white striped umbrellas'. For Jonathan, the idea of trees and foliage seemed like the perfect conceptual fit for something that gives you shade, and from there he extended that premise to the idea of 'cloud cover'.  The resulting designs, entitled 'The Shrubbery' and 'Partly Cloudy' form a graphic, hyper-colourful collection of sun umbrellas, Go Large umbrellas and outdoor cushions.  With sun umbrellas (pictured above) priced at $249.00, we reckon there'll be a few of these gracing Australian beaches this summer!
