2015 was a big year for Melbourne industrial designer Ross Gardam.  Designing, prototyping and developing a brand new product range is no mean feat, and last year saw the release of not one but two new collections from this talented local designer – the ‘Aura’ lighting collection, and ‘Asymmetry’ table collection.

The Aura lighting collection consists of an elegantly streamlined pendant lamp (available in two sizes and a variety of colours), as well as a limited edition desk lamp.  ‘The desk lamp is a bit of a special piece’ says Ross. ‘Each component is precision engineered, and the product features a unique magnetic joint, which allows the shade to tilt and orbit 360 degrees’. (See a short video showing how the lamp tilts and orbits here). This particular piece is limited to just 25 units in gold, each one individually numbered.

The concept for the Aura lighting collection has been percolating in Ross’ mind for a couple of years. ‘I had sketched the Aura pendant form on and off for two years and kept on coming back to it’ says Ross. His goal was to create a very simple, pared back shape with a contemporary feel, but also a subtle nod to industrial pendants of the past. The resulting form is effortlessly understated, with a beautifully gentle glow.

The corresponding Aura desk lamp came about through an opportune collaboration with Ross’s father. ‘The development of the desk lamp happened relatively quickly for a product of its complexity, due to being able to collaborate with my father’ explains Ross. ‘Matt recently retired and purchased a metal mill and lathe to tinker with, so Aura was a great project to work together on, which we had not done since my teenage years’.

Ross runs his design studio in Melbourne’s CBD with a team of 5 staff – a mix of industrial designers and engineers. The studio is currently working on another new lighting collection to launch this year, and a new furniture range soon after.  All Ross Gardam lights are designed, manufactured and assembled locally.

The Aura lighting collection is available directly through Ross Gardam – enquire online here.
